Making the rounds on social media at the moment is one woman’s experience of the fall into poverty detailed in an article for the New Statesman. Called The Upsetting Reality of Modern Day Poverty, it describes the reality of saving 2p and 5p coins in a bottle when TV chefs talk of a cheap shoulder of lamb costing £20.
Two organisations which may be of particular help if you are having similar problems are:
- The Citizens Advice Bureau who can offer advice on all sorts of issues including debt, benefits, housing, employment, discrimination and consumer issues. You can find their website here.
- Christians Against Poverty who run a local debt centre which helps people weighed down by debt. You can find CAP’s website here.
Many professionals can refer people to foodbanks including doctors, schools, social workers, probation officers, citizens advice and mnay others. Please do not come to a foodbank to obtain food without a voucher from one of these referring professionals. Thank you.
